There is also another quote similar to this one, "Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer."  Abraham Lincoln was a very intelligent man, even making the list of the "The 15 smartest presidents of all time" by Business Insider.      According to Presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, when Lincoln became President his first presidential cabinet consisted of friends and rivals.

     It's understandable how Lincoln would want to keep his enemies (rivals) close, but why would they want to work for him?  In the end it's a testament to Lincoln's character, to his ability to  bring people together for a common cause, and finally, it speaks to his genius.  After all, this is a man who was self-taught, and went on to become the 16th President of the United States.
