6 Tips for Ensuring a Successful Freshman Year

Ensuring a successful High School experience.

Middle School students, as we approach the end of eighth grade, I thought it would be a good idea to send you off to high school with some tidbits, or sayings, something to refer to in high school that could help with your success.

Some teachers I reached out to had some encouraging words of advice for you.  Here is what they had to say.

1.  "Get Involved.  High school is what you make of it.  If you choose not to do anything, you will feel like high school is boring.  If you choose to get involved in a sport, a club, leadership, an academy or even attend sporting events, dances, and school events, you will have the time of your life and make so many amazing high school memories!"   from Ms. Moore, High School Activities Director

2.  "Avoid stress. While it may be daunting at first, all the pieces fall in place. On day 1, this is a new you, a new beginning. Ask your teachers for help, even if they do not teach the subject you need help in, you may be surprised by some who know more than their subject. With all of this, pass your class the first time! Enjoy high school, try something new, take good care."  from Mr. Simas, High School 10th and 11th grade Social Sciences/ History

3.  "Reach out and ask for help.  Students, take advantage of the free, confidential mental/emotional support services offered through our schools if you or a friend are struggling emotionally." from Mr. Mendes, High School Health.

4. "Don't try to do everything.  Find the thing you really like doing and work to become really good at that thing." from Mr. Serpa, High School Choir Director.

5. “Do what you gotta do, so you can do what you wanna do.” from Mr. Thompson, Junior High School 8th Grade Math.

6. "In high school go to the dances, rallies, and sports games.  These events will become memories.  Memories that you will cherish and want to relive again." from Ms. Martinez, Junior High School ELA.

High School is an important part of one's growing experience.  Life-long friendships are made here, sports careers are scouted from here, and even long-term commitments to study something begin here.  Take what tidbits of advice work for you and hang on to them, for when you are feeling down, to when you are feeling stuck, and finally until the day you graduate.
